How to change your driving test centre
Moving your test to a different centre costs nothing and takes a few minutes. It is the most under-used trick for getting tested sooner, because waiting lists vary enormously between centres that are half an hour apart.

How to do it
- Open the change your driving test service on GOV.UK. It handles centre changes as well as date changes.
- Sign in with your driving licence number and either your test reference or your theory pass certificate number.
- Choose to change the test centre, then search. You will see the dates available at each centre you look at.
- Confirm. No payment, and your existing fee moves across to the new appointment.
Change the centre and the date together. Car tests allow only 2 changes in total, and centre and date come out of the same allowance. Doing both in one visit costs you one change instead of two.

Picking a centre worth moving to
Two things differ between centres, and they pull in different directions.
Waiting time is the one that usually justifies a move. The national average sits at 20.2 weeks, but quiet centres can be a few weeks while busy city ones run far longer. A centre 30 minutes further away with a much shorter list can save you months.
Pass rate is the one people chase and the one to treat with suspicion. Across the 289 centres we compare, rates run from 71.4% down to 34.3% against a 50% national average. That gap is real, but it reflects who tests at each centre as much as the difficulty of the roads, and you would be driving unfamiliar streets on the day.

Changing centre to grab a cancellation
Widening your search to several centres multiplies the cancellation slots you can see. Every test someone else moves or cancels goes back into the public calendar within minutes, so watching three centres beats watching one.
Spend your changes carefully though. Hold your 2 changes until you see a slot you would genuinely accept, at a centre you are genuinely willing to drive to. The full routine is on our driving test cancellations guide.
Common questions
Can I change my driving test centre?
Yes. The same free change service on GOV.UK that moves your test date also moves it to a different centre. You keep your fee and you do not rebook from scratch, as long as you are within your change limit.
Does changing test centre cost anything?
No. Changing centre through GOV.UK is free. Your original fee follows you to the new appointment. Only a cancellation and fresh booking costs you money.
How many times can I change my driving test centre?
Changing centre uses the same allowance as changing the date: 2 changes for car tests, 6 for other test types. Moving centre and date at the same time counts as one change, so do both in one go.
Should I change to a test centre with a higher pass rate?
Be careful with this. Pass rates reflect who takes tests at a centre as much as the roads around it, and driving unfamiliar roads cancels out much of the advantage. A shorter waiting list is usually a better reason to switch than a higher pass rate.
How much notice do I need to change test centre?
For a car test, 10 full working days to keep your fee. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not. Inside that window you can still change, but you risk losing the fee.
